The Joy of National Poetry Month


 

Poetry and Jazz were both major driving forces of creative energy behind what the world has come to know as the Harlem Renaissance. Celebrating National Poetry Month and Jazz Appreciation might strike some as inappropriate in 2025 when the leading nation of the free world, the United States of America, is in all-out tariff-war with allies and foes alike, and extreme weather events occur on a regular unpredictable basis.

But many people in the international community depend on music and poetry as primary cultural resources that help them put everything else in perspective. Therefore, they celebrate, as with the posts on AuthorsDen:

THE EXTRAORDINARY TALENT OF BEAUFORD DELANEY

    This 1941 portrait of celebrated author James Baldwin, entitled “Dark Rapture,” is one of numerous masterworks created by the equally celebrated Harlem Renaissance artist Beauford Delaney (1902-1979). Delaney (whose brother Joseph, 1904-1991, was also an accomplished artist) enjoyed a remarkable career that spanned some five decades. That he was a visual artist whose creative aesthetics profoundly influenced the work of a major literary artist like James Baldwin is one indicator of how powerfully charged the creative energy of the Harlem Renaissance truly was.                    The ever-popular LL Cool J on the March 2013 cover of ESSENCE Magazine . “What I’m sowing today, I be reaping tomorrow So here’s some joyful bars, to replace your sorrow.” --LL Cool J (from Old School New School ) It was very difficult not to laugh when reading Robbie Ettelson’s satirical rant, “Being Positive is for Chumps,” in last week’s online Acclaim Magazine , against celebrity rappers for their inspiration-oriented tweets. In fact, I’ll admit it. Even though the sarcastic tirade was based in large part on a quote from The River of Winged Dreams , the subtitle of the piece almost sent me rolling on the floor: “If Robbie of Unkut comes across one more inspirational tweet from a rapper he's going to vomit rainbows.” At the same time, I smiled at the realization that the quotes which apparently have threatened to turn Robbie’s tummy inside out were often, for the rappers who shared them, not ju...
